Susan Thompson, LPC-A
Supervised by Dr. Michael Lee, Ph.D. and Sharon Bice, LPC-S
I am a licensed therapist specializing in treatment of anxiety disorders and co-occurring disorders such as OCD and ADHD. Throughout this work I frequently help individuals overcome issues with overthinking, rumination, and perfectionism. I have experience working with people across the entire lifespan including children, teens, young and mid-level professionals, parents, and families.
Clinical Training and Background
I hold a Masters of Psychology in Counseling from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. I am a certified mediator through Northwestern University.
I completed my practicum at Georgetown Behavioral Health Hospital, followed by an internship at a private practice anxiety specialty clinic in Austin. I have authored several books on cognitive therapy for anxiety, including Cognitive Transformation, Crush Anxiety and Arty & Friends. Additionally, I partner with The Chicago School and Kepler University Hospital in Austria to provide underserved communities with trauma-related programs.
Outside of mental health-related endeavors, I served as a team mentor for the national champion softball team at the University of Texas at Austin. I worked as Chief Human Resources Officer for AmLaw 100 law firms, technology companies, and non-profits prior to my work as a counselor.
Therapeutic Approach
My approach to therapy is holistic and I believe in the mind-body connection. My core theoretical orientation is cognitive-behavioral in nature, and within this framework I often use approaches such as Exposure and Response Prevention or cognitive restructuring. I believe these evidence-based therapies empower people to understand their values and change limiting core beliefs and unhelpful thinking patterns. I work with targeted programs to treat OCD and ADHD.
Outside of therapy, you may find me walking around Town Lake (sometimes known as Lady Bird Lake) or with my two boys and Miley-the-Cat.
